Improved Radio Communications on Pitcairn
For those unfamiliar with the technology, a radio repeater is an electronic device that receives and retransmits radio signals, extending their range and improving reception. Repeaters are particularly useful for overcoming obstacles such as hills and valleys, ensuring reliable communication across a wider area. Thanks to recent efforts, handheld radio coverage on Pitcairn Island has been significantly improved.
The upgrade was tested by New Zealand Police Officer Gavin Cyprian and new settler Mike Collis, who confirmed strong offshore radio communication up to 60 miles, with usable coverage extending to 70 miles. Testing was conducted at the top of each hour, with assistance from the Silver Support bridge crew.
The project originated in June 2023 when former Councillor Kerry Young raised concerns about local radio communication limitations and discussed potential solutions with Mike. In response, Mike prepared a report for the Council, recommending new radio equipment. However, due to cost constraints, the project was initially put on hold in late 2024. To keep the initiative moving, Mike generously provided high-quality, lightly used radio equipment that was still in excellent condition. After further Council discussions regarding the best placement for the repeater, Highest Point was selected to ensure optimal coverage. The project was unanimously approved in January 2025.
Mike and Gavin used an existing shed at Highest Point as the installation site, clearing trees to maximize sunlight for the solar panels. They then set up the mast and antenna system, with Mike temporarily mounting the radio equipment rack to the wall. Due to the arrival of the Governor and upcoming cruise ships, final work on the floor and interior wall is scheduled for completion after our busy cruise ship season.
This successful project is another great example of teamwork and dedication coming together to benefit the island.
